When the press reports about „historic moments of chamber music“ (Badische
Neueste Nachrichten, Karlsruhe), „Encounter with three Olympians“ (Nürnberger
Nachrichten), „World Class Standard“ (Fono Forum), „volcanic temperament“
(FAZ) or „extremely fervent“ (Frankfurter Rundschau) it spells Trio Bamberg.
Robert Benz, professor of the piano in Mannheim, has been one of the most
outstanding pianists of Germany. In his youth he won first prize both of the
International Busoni competition and the International Liszt-Bartok
competition and began an international career as a soloist. He soon
discovered his predilection for chamber music which he by now has lived to
the full for many years with the Trio Bamberg.
The Russian violinist Jewgeni Schuk, originating from an old traditional
family of musicians, became first concertmaster of the Moscow Philharmonic
at the age of 23. On coming to Germany in 1990 he was offered the same
position at the Stuttgarter Staatstheater, which he still covers today. He
plays a violin by Vuillaume among whose illustrious owners were Wieniawsky
and Wilhelmy.
The third man is Alexander Hülshoff who replaced the Bamberg cellist Stephan
Gerlinghaus in 2006.
At only 28 he obtained a professorship for the cello at Folkwang Hochschule
Essen after studies with Martin Ostertag and Lynn Harrell. With his
Grancino-Cello „David Popper“, made in 1691, he regularly performs as soloist
with various internationally renowned orchestras.
The Trio Bamberg has performed in nearly all major German cities like
Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Dresden, Hamburg as well as in many international
capitals like Brussels, Barcelona, Bergen, Ljubljana, Naples, Osaka,
Shanghai, Riad…
Extensive concert tours brought the trio to South-Africa, Japan, Mexico,
Italy, Saudi-Arabia, Norway and South America.
The fact that the Bamberg Trio is numbered among the top ensembles is made
obvious by the great demand: In the year 2006 the trio was invited by 7
international music festivals, among them the
Schleswig-Holstein-Musik-Festival, the International Music Festival at
Echternach the Rheingau Music Festival and the Beethovenfest in Bonn.
The to date 7 CD productions of the trio were highly praised by the musical
press and the audience: Scala pronounced them „outstanding“. The recording
of Schnittke/Schostakowitsch even won the German Grammy Award.
